Wisconsin Angus Association
Board of Directors Meeting
UW Arlington Headquarters
May 1, 2007

The meeting was called to order by President Tony Weber. Those present were: Leslie Mindemann, Jim Hawthorne, Jim Ward, Kathy Miller, Tony Weber, Scott Gaffney, Dan Downing, Tom Tomaw, Kevin Konkol, Jeff Swenson, Steve Wagemester and Ardel Quam.

Secretary report: Gaffney moved to accept the minutes from the March 17, 2007, meeting. Mindemann seconded the motion carried.

Treasurer report: Downing moved to accept the financial statement. Ward seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Old business: Spring Sale- Tomaw reported on the successful day. Still have some outstanding checks from the sale and went through some of the different bills from the sale. WJAA was given $100 for the clean up of the sale area after the sale. Had 120 registered buyers. Tomaw would like the board to give Jim Murray something for all his help and all what he does for the association. Gaffney moved to make Jim Murray an honorary member to the WAA and present him with a jacket at WBE. Konkol will look at getting a jacket embroidered for him. The pre-sale party at the barn Saturday night was very nice. Everyone agreed that they would like to see this continue. A comment was made to see a list of guidelines/rules to hand out on a sale tour to be given to consignors outlining what is expected of them as a consignor.

Web page: A new rep for the web page. Updates are made about every other month. Wis. Farmer, Wis. Agri.View and Mid-State all want to link to our Web page. Pertinent information spot has been added to the Web site.

Budget: Mindemann went over the budget that was set through February 2007 financials. Come up with some ideas to invest some of the money to promote Angus and fellowship. Mindemann will talk with the Jefferson County Fairgrounds and see if we could have a social hour Saturday evening. Miller moved to accept the budget with the corrections that we put in this evening. Konkol seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Preview Show: Kind reported that he has contacted the judge. He ordered plaques and hats for the show last year. He was given the go ahead to get whatever awards he wanted to. Unanimous decision by those present to offer the judge up to $300 for his expenses for the open show to help offset the higher cost of fuel.

Farm Tech Days- Hawthornes have volunteered to help get cattle there and working with Horstmeyer who is the chairman of that committee.

Directory: Waiting on a few ads was a very good directory. Looks very nice.

Other old business: Feeder calf sale- Mindemann has been in contact with Packerland Packing from Green Bay. A couple of different directions to go with this idea. She has sent a list of questions to a person at Packerland and has not heard back yet. Looking at maybe getting carcass data back for the breeder. Swenson has been looking at getting some type of fed steer “contest” going in the state. He is also looking at a pre-conditioned feeder calf sale going in the state. Some members of WDATCP and UW Extension are looking at going to Iowa to look at some different feedlot programs they have going there.

New business: Weber received a letter from the Dane County Chamber of Commerce wondering if Wisconsin is thinking of hosting the National Junior Show after 2010. After 2010 Dane County would like to bid on hosting the show. Weber will tell her that we’ll keep them in mind if it comes up.

Field day: Hawthorne talked to Country Lane who will be hosting the field day. Planning on a barbeque and touring their locker plant/meat market. September 15th is the date.

Committee reports: Annual meeting – Quam will be talking to the new owners of where we have held the meeting to get their feeling on continuing there.

WJAA: Report from Kelsi Retallick about the LEAD Conference held in LaCrosse. Had 27 juniors in attendance. A good time by those in attendance.

Jeff Swenson from WDATCP- GROW Wisconsin. Increase the number of meat animals and consumption in the state. He has started an email list to the livestock leaders in the Wisconsin. If you prefer to not get them let him know.

Seeing no further business, Gaffney moved to adjourn the meeting. Konkol seconded the motion. Meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Ardel Quam,
